Relieving your neck pain without resorting to painkillers can feel impossible – especially after you’ve suffered from an agonizing, stiff neck for months, if not years.
But there are ways to fix your neck pain, which have worked for many of our patients, and helped thousands of people over the years in Edina.
How To Cure Neck Pain – 3 Proven Strategies
1 – Loosen Up With Simple, At-Home Exercises
A lot of neck pain is caused by inactivity, and being trapped in a fixed position for far too long.
A way to fix your neck pain is to use at-home neck exercises – and you don’t need fancy equipment or a lot of time to do this.
Firstly, you could try to free your neck by simply turning your head left and right – and aim to look as far over your shoulder as you can – behind you.
Do this 20 times over your left shoulder, and then 20 times over your right.
Turn to the point where you feel a little bit of pain, push into it slightly, then let go.
Over time, the point at which the pain comes on will be further into the stretch.
Another neck exercise you can do is to swing a gallon milk jug – yes, a simple one-gallon milk (or water) jug works great for loosening tight arm, neck, and shoulder muscles.
All you have to do is fill the jug with a couple of inches of water, swing the jug in a circle 10 times forwards, 10 times backwards, and then do the same with the other arm.
That’s two simple exercises that can help loosen up the neck muscles quickly, and easily.
2 – Use Ice, Not Heat To Stop Pain
Ice is by far the best way to ease neck pain (as opposed to using heat).
My tip is to use ice whenever you’re feeling achy or painful, such as at the end of a very busy day. Heat can be useful, but it’s better suited for when you’re feeling stiff, rather than painful.
To get neck pain relief, apply an ice pack for 10 minutes or so, and use it little but very often (every hour).
However, while ice is good, it’s not very practical when you’re out all day, or socializing with friends and family.
It’s inconvenient to carry ice packs with you where you go, and it can be a bit embarrassing too.

3 – Avoid Reading For More Than 20 Minutes In Bed
Reading in bed usually involves sitting in a fixed position, with your head forward and down towards your book or Kindle.
When you do this, it increases tension in your neck muscles, and like stretching an elastic band – eventually, it will “fray” and even snap.
Worse, at this late time in the day, your neck muscles are already tired and weak.
And placing them under even more stress so late in the day will make more tension and headaches through the night, inevitable.
If you do enjoy reading for a long time, then the best advice is to set yourself up better by reading outside the bedroom.
